What's faster is reading from more than 1 disk.  it could be raid 5
across 7 drives. it could be a stripe across 7 drives. it's all
relative.

what's fastest is hardware based raid.

You have to choose the right tech for the right app.  If you're doing
fileserving across 100Mbit, it makes no sense to go for a huge ultra
fast performing disk array, because 100Mbit is going to be your
primary bottleneck.

You have to ask specific questions to get specific answers.
