I asked this question a little while back, and there seems to be some
problems compiling with gcj 3.4 (oprofile, I believe). It seems as
though it might end up as a Fedora Extra at some point. There is a
separate mailing list that has some other comments in it (very low
traffic, though) here:

I must admit, I went through quite a bit of effort to get
eclipse-2.1.1-4 compiled with the ssa branch of gcc 3.5 (and
eclipse-2.1.0-22 before that), and in the end, I didn't really notice
much of a speed increase. It booted a bit quicker, but that's about
all.
