Slow glxgears and ATI 3.9.0 driver

I have horribly slow glxgears after installing the new ATI driver.  I
have an nForce2 MSI K7N2 Delta-L motherboard, and all the trimmings.

Under FC1, I just installed the driver and away I go.  With FC2 I have
to compile the drivers for compatibility.  Anyways.. I've done all that,
but my FPS rate when running glxgears is like...

1310 frames in 5.0 seconds = 262.000 FPS
1200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 240.000 FPS
1320 frames in 5.0 seconds = 264.000 FPS
1440 frames in 5.0 seconds = 288.000 FPS
1320 frames in 5.0 seconds = 264.000 FPS
1320 frames in 5.0 seconds = 264.000 FPS

And the like... from other people on this list, they are getting 4500
FPS and all that.  Rebuff these amounts for me, because part of me
thinks that those numbers (4500's) aren't true, unless they've reduced
the window size..
