    Though I confess I usually do type startx. I've grown
    used to using the above in a Konsole with a "paper"
    schema. And then there is mozilla, ooffice, LyX,
    xcdroast, dvd::rip...

Once the user can remember how to switch between insert and command
mode. And knows how to choose whether to write the changes or not when
exiting vim, I'd be inclined to agree about it being a LOT harder to
mess up with vim than with classic vi. (and yes the colors do help)

I'd also say that while editing a grub.conf isn't hard to figure out,
the OP did seam uncomfortable with such editing... thus would probably be
better off getting a little practice first.
