I'm coming in on the middle of this but having said that...
You can use tar to go to multiple floppies. I have done it
several times but not within the last 3 years. I don't have
any floppies or I'd test it right now.
Having used VMS years ago myself ( before it was Open) and
worked for DEC for 5 years, the gentleman raises valid
points. However, the Linux world does provide equivalent
functionality to the OpenVMS functions in this regard.
Unix/Linux allows tar archives to span multiple volumes as long
as the device is removable. I mean Tape ARchive wouldn't have
been much use back in 1984 if it couldn't have spanned tapes
on my trusty microVax.
