And there's still no detailed description of when exactly you get what
error.

There are a very few similar problem reports (with various distributions)
findable with Google, but where details are posted, most look like
problems with cdrecord drivers or concurrent device access by
magicdev/autorun (which you should disable, too).

Sure, as a last resort, on his own safe desktop machine, the user can try
setting the setuid bit on cdrecord. But that would be a rather crude way
and only a work-around for other problems (like general problems with
an USB CD-burner).
