Have you looked in /proc?
Perhaps diskstats has what you want?

$ cat diskstats
   1    0 ram0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
....
   1   15 ram15 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
   3    0 hda 116438 12309 2412432 687146 31271 82327 908752 1847709 0 558182 2534856

Then there is sar as in "sar -d 5 5"...
