I suspect you need to look at the configuration files for your applet. 
Look in /etc/sysconfig/rhn directory for the sources file.  In the
sources file you will find the list of servers that will be checked for
updates.  Verify that you have valid working mirrors for your system.  

I think if one of these entries is invalid or not working correctly you
could get the hang you are seeing.
