Change [keep] console font upon login?

I've set up a new FC1 box, and have configured the bootline in grub
(vga=) to give me a 132x50 console as another box I have (which was not
a fresh install but has been upgraded through various RHs to FC1).

This works fine till I login at the console, when it snaps badly to
48x24. If I change consoles (<Alt-Ctrl>) to X11 and back, it reverts
top 132x50, but becomes unrecoverable corrupted once text goes past line
24 (e.g., top half of 132x24 font in 132x50 sized boxes).

I've commented out the SYSFONT= (or similar) in /etc/sysconfig/i18n
(which forced this change at boot up in rc.sysinit), but I can't for the
life of me find out what's doing it upon login (virgin user account).

   Any ideas?
