errors using iPod as USB device

i am attempting to use my iPod with the USB adapter, which strangely
enough I have done once with success with FC2 but cannot repeat. i see
these messages in /var/logs/messages when the device is plugged in to
a USB port:

kernel: usb 4-2: new full speed USB device using address 2
kernel: usb 4-2: device not accepting address 2, error -71
kernel: usb 4-2: new full speed USB device using address 3
kernel: usb 4-2: device not accepting address 3, error -71
kernel: usb 1-6: new high speed USB device using address 2
kernel: usb 1-6: control timeout on ep0out
kernel: ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: Unlink after no-IRQ?  Different ACPI or
APIC settings may help.
kernel: usb 1-6: control timeout on ep0out
kernel: usb 1-6: device not accepting address 2, error -110
kernel: usb 1-6: new high speed USB device using address 3
kernel: usb 1-6: control timeout on ep0out
kernel: usb 1-6: control timeout on ep0out
kernel: usb 1-6: device not accepting address 3, error -110
