Run fsck from the boot prompt

Mark,

Have you tried bringing it up in single user mode? Grab GRUB's attention
at boot time and append a " 1" or " single" to the "kernel
/vmlinuz-2.4..." line, then let the boot continue. If this doesn't work,
try again with " emergency". If THAT doesn't work, try CD #1 or the Rescue
CD.
