is this a bug with the x-server?

I'm running fedora 2 on a Dell.  The monitor is probed correctly and all
is well until I log out.  when the x-server tries to restart itself the
monitor looses its signal and displays this error:

24K / 54hz is out of range

not a good thing.  does anyone know how to fix this?
