The USB probs are kernel probs, they are still not all resolved either but the 
worst of it is gone.

You don't need to compile.

Arjan is the kernel God at RH, he publishes test kernels here as RPMs:

http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.6/RPMS.kernel/

You can usually get the latest fixes (and new brokeness) here before it 
becomes official.

You probably want this:

http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.6/RPMS.kernel/kernel-2.6.6-1.422.i686.rpm

Install with

rpm -i kernel-2.6.6-1.422.i686.rpm

Edit /boot/grub/grub.conf to make the Default number match the kernel you want 
to boot into, the top one is zero, the next is 1, etc.
