Resoved some: repost/wishlist item: FC2 libata/system response with busy disk

I'm a bit more excited than I should be, I think - just loaded the test 
kernel 2.6.6-1.422smp.  It is the first Fedora Core kernel to boot my 
system unaided.  Haven't done performance tests but if you've got the 
same board as me, booting problem over.  Still uses libata though.
