mounting a samba filesystem via cifs: also 1st share blocking=resolved by cifs

If anyone's interested, I get the following error when I try to mount 
using cifs:

mount error 5 = Input/output error
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)

This is using a custom 2.6.6 kernel.
