JRE and foo.jar

I downloaded the JRE from <http://www.java.com/> and it nicely created a directory j2re1.4.2_04.  now i've downloaded jedit41install.jar from <http://www.sourceforge.net> and can't figure what to do with it.

I'd like to know how to un-jar (the acronym seems similar to tar) foo.jar from the command line, please.

[net Desktop]$ /home/net/Desktop/j2re1.4.2_04/bin/java jedit41install.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: jedit41install/jar
