No.  All the yum "service" does is create a lock file.  The yum.cron file check for the existance of the lock file, and if it exists runs yum.

"service yum status" will tell you if the lock file exits.  If there is some error in the yum.conf, proxy settings incorrect, etc. it will not give you any useful info.
