I have seen similar problems with my IBM C3. (Like a Palm Vx only black.)

It seems to believe that there the cradle is reporting two serial ports
and then gets upset that the last one does not work. (Give me an error
about reporting two USB serial ports, but only haveing one. Please use a
lower number.)

I have yet to get it to work consistantly. It is getting intercepted by a
kernel module called "visor" that does not seem to have much in the way of
documentation.

Maybe i need to talk to greg K-H and see if I can work out a reliable
fix...
