Just on icon on the panel, not really on the screen.
But one click to mount / one click to umount, this is actually the faster and shorter way.

Gdesklets takes a lot of space too. ;-)

You can also write your script, put in somewhere same .gnome-scripts
(check the mailing list about this) , and you will have it under
right-click of your mouse / Scripts ...

After, this all depends of how much time you want to invest in the
solution ...
