KDE, Gnome and fonts

I am a unreconstructed fan of KDE but occasionally I like to use Gonme 
applications such as the Gimp. The problem is the Gnome font size seems about 
two points smaller than the KDE one. When I start up GCC, the font size of 
*everything* suddenly increases by two points so KDE fonts are now enormous! 
How can I achieve a happy compromise between the two worlds. I have a 
$HOME/.gtkrc-mine which contains:

style "user-font" {

	fontset = "-microsoft-verdana-*-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*"
}

widget_class "*" style "user-font"

but this seems to be ignored.
