I have a laptop and was running rhl 9. My laptop would not shut off when
powering down. In rhl 9 I would have build acpi support into the kernel. So
I decided to switch to fedora core 1 instead.
In fdc1 all you have to do is add the following to grub.conf:

acpi=on

and I made sure that the service 'acpid' running under
'redhat-config-services'

My system now shuts off on power down.

My grub.conf below. I have a dual boot system running fdc1 and xp on a dell
inspiron 5100.
