x priority level kernel 2.6

I hear there might be problem with the scheduling in the kernel 2.6 because x 
is set to run at a higher priority. When i do a lot of writing/reading to 
disk my x lags. I didn't have this problem in kernel 2.4. How can I  change 
the priority x is run at.
