What's wrong with my Java installation?

Thanks you so much for your help and the valuable information.
I installed JDK 1.4, and its working without any problem. I haven't yet 
tried the solution for 'Eclipse' but am sure that it will also work as 
suggested by you.

The Fedora kernel is build with NPTL, or Native Posix Threading
Library.  I believe that the earliest JDK that supports NPTL is JDK
1.4.2_01.  Most definately it does NOT support JDK 1.3.
