OK, thanks for that info, I won't worry about blowing up the display... 
But I still have not had success getting to the 1024x768 resolution.

I have tried increasing the hsync and vsync, up to as high as 150.  It
seems to make no difference.

I am attaching the XF86Config and XFree86.0.log as well.  One line of
interest in the log file is:
"(II) I810(0): Not using mode "1024x768" (no mode of this name)"

I tried adding the "Modeline" entry into XF86Config, but that seemed to
have no effect either.

Any ideas?
