have you commented out in your globals the lines:

encrypt passwords = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd

or do you use another password-backend?? it they are still with the semicolon at the beginning, samba doesn't know
where to authenticate your users.

if you have done this, make sure, your users a created apporpriate in the /etc/smbpasswd file AND existing in
/etc/passwd too..
