Interchanging GNOME and KDE

I think I got myself misunderstood.I can change the default session settings using 'desktop switching tool' after logging in but I cannot choose my next session to be anything else than the default one before logging in.I can choose 'failsafe' though.

Any suggestions with 'xpde' ?
