This happens when a package is installed and the previous is not
uninstalled. Aka SYNAPTIC LOCK UP.

This is easy to fix.

At first:
upgrade your synaptic. There was a synaptic version which would love to
make this things.

Try like this: rpm -Uvh
http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/1/i386/RPMS.freshrpms/synaptic-0.47-1.fr.i386.rpm

Take a note about what packages are duplicated. Something like:
rpm -qa |grep autoconf (as it seems autoconf is duplicated).

It will answer something like:

autoconf-1.1.1.1.2
autoconf-1.1.1.1.3 (just an example)

do a rpm -e autoconf-1.1.1.1.2 (the older one) and repeat these steps
for every duplicated package.
