Unable to Build Kernel

I tried this sequence.  Some commands did not work, but the make 
(without any
argument) seems to have solved the problem.  The kernel itself has some 
problems,
but I'm guessing that has to do with my own inadequacy during the 
configuration
process.  Thanks for the help.
