Plans for DVD-ROM image?

I looked around this morning and was unable to find a single i386 
machines that didn't offer (generally by default) a DVD-ROM drive where 
an optical drive was an option at all.

I do know the strict definition of ubiquitous. I also know the 
definition of pedantic.
