motherboard decision help

So if its software raid (when built onto the motherboard), how can the raid
array be functional without an operating system on it? I was under the
impression that if you went into a piece of hardware's bios and set up the
array, that software was not involved?

Dual channel RAM is completely transparent, so is true hardware
RAID but any "RAID" controller integrated on a motherboard is
software RAID.
