Fair question.
As packages go pine is harder to build than helloworld and vastly
easier than apache, emacs, perl, the kernel, or the X window system.

value in working from source. The pine package is as good a non trivial
package as there is.
I do agree, RPM packages are good when nicely done. This is why I
repeated the previous hint to use dag's package and did not go into
serious detail on the build your own path.
