(Does/Did) Rh9 do SATA ?

Wrong. 
As long as I know, yes, RH9 does support it; the initial kernel (2.4.20)
built for RedHat9 had support yet for several most-known SATA
controllers. Just a year ago RH9, and this seems the remote past...
