Certainly because of a faulty command line. See

for some explanations on how the route-ethX file has to look.

Those are wrong/incomplete. What shall 12.168.88.0 and 204.117.218.0 be,
the network address or the gateway?
ip route add 12.168.88.0/24 dev eth0
ip route add 204.117.218.0/24 dev eth1
What you did is creating a host route.
