Sounds like you are not unmounting the stick before your pull it out?  (I 
meant to say this in my first reply but wrote mount instead of umount)

I think it will get called the first free name.

If unmounting was the issue, you may find it helps, it sets up autofs to auto 
mount and unmount the device.
