Soundcard recognized but no sound

i launched the alsamixer in a xterm and got a menu in text mode
i succeeded to raise the volume with the up key and i think i 
succeeded to unmute with the 'm' key.

Is it the right way ?
What else can i check ?
Is there another more intuitive mixer ?
