Gnome Problems

Hi all,

Just noticing some quirks in GNOME/Nautilus i never noticed before.

1) Newly installed packages aren't visible on the menu until you log out
and back in again. In FC1 (and earlier iirc) the shortcut would appear
almost immediately. These packages seem to be largely appearing in
sub-folders under Preferences, as well as their usual location (Although
not always)

Is this just me or the packages I'm using?


2) Creating Launchers (#1)

I have some read only NFS shares automounted under /nfs. I would like to
create a shortcut from say /nfs/music, onto my desktop. But nautilus
does not want to allow this.

The "Make Link" menu item is disabled, as /nfs is read only. Ideally
"Make Link" might notify the user if the current directory is read only,
and ask for another location (ie desktop).


3) Creating Launchers (#2)

If you create a launcher to a directory or url, and use the browse
button, you can seemingly only select files. Selecting a directory and
pressing open.. Opens the directory (as it does when you are browsing to
select a file).

I tried using this to get around the previous launchers problem, but to
no avail.

4) Launchers cannot be modified after creation.

I made some sftp:// shortcuts on my desktop. Right clicking, and
selecting properties presents a dialog box. Nowhere am i able to change
the target of this launcher. I could have sworn this was doable in the
past.


Have people experienced these features/problems in Fedora Core 2? Or am
i missing something?

I dont normally use nautilus for file management, so these may be
"features" im simply not aware of :) These aren't big issues for me, I
can easily work around them. But for a user not familiar with the
command line these kinds of things would be extremely frustrating!
