Configure multiple ethernet interfaces

I have considered doing just that:  remove the 4-port NIC and try to
configure eth0 and eth1 (both built-in) as desired.  Then, reinstall the
4-port NIC and see if it is auto-detected properly and eth2-5 hold
thereafter the settings the I provide.

Does anyone have any ideas that don't require the removal of the card?
