Install problem

Thank you for the suggestions. I didn't know about the alternate consoles.

With just "linux" or even "linux mediacheck", Alt-F4 reveals the SCSI
controllers are found okay and the lone drive is there as sda at scsi0,
channel 0, id 0, lun 0 as expected. And then:

<6>ide-cd: cmd 0x28 timed out
<4>hda: DMA interrupt recovery
<4>hda: lost interrupt
<4>hda: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
<4>hda: status error: error=0x00
<3>hda: drive not ready for commad

And repeats after a little wait.

When I do "linux noprobe" instead, the SCSI controllers are not identified
first (the last things were PCI and USB hub). The Alt-F4 messages are
similar otherwise, but I just hang at "running /sbin/loader" and don't get
to the blue intro screen.

In either case, the last line under Alt-F3 is:
* trying to mount CD device had

Note: the CD-Rom is and IDE device. The only hard disk is SCSI.

Any additional hints? This almost looks like a hdd problem, but I had done a
test install of RedHat 7.2 last week just for kicks and that went fine.

You may try "linux noprobe" to select the SCSI driver module by hand. I
am not sure whether the kernel 2.6 knows about 2 aic7xxx version, the
new and the old one. Take the old one if possible.

You too should be able to switch consoles through install as long the
system does not completely freeze. Using "Alt+F2" and F3 and F4 you will
get on different consoles showing you some information on what's
happening.
