Can't rebuild drivers, get errors during compile

I upgraded to Core 2, but this has caused an issue with rebuilding
drivers. At first it complained that there were no header files. It told
me that I had to run make on the kernel. This of course, created the
version.h file with "custom". I cleared that and now I get the following
error. 

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

Argument "gcc (GCC) 3" isn't numeric in numeric ge (>=) at
/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl line 1493, <STDIN> line 1.
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your
running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

The kernel defined by this directory of header files does not have the
same
address space size as your running kernel.

In the past with all version going back to RH7.3, I have only had to
install the kernel source to build drivers. This is the first time that
I have had to do anything with them.
