Hurray,

I have found a solution at
http://www.laclinux.com/ftp/lac/systems/laptop/common/modem/README.modem

in addition to what is written in README of the winmodem drivers, I had
to do

1. cp scripts/slmodemd /etc/init.d/
2. add "char-major-212 slamr" and "char-major-213 slusb" to
/etc/modprobe.conf (not modules.conf like in 2.4)
3. /sbin/chkconfig slmodemd on
4. ln -s /dev/ttySL0 /dev/modem

restart the computer. Now the winmodem will always work - my notebook
(Russian Roverbook.com) is fully Linux-enabled again :-)

Timothy.
