Their drivers ARE free.  They're not Open Source. 
That is your beef.  OBVIOUSLY there are published
specifications out there.  There are a million and one
third parts "Tweak your nVidia card's settings"
applications out there for Windows.  So don't spout
"There are no published specifcations."

Go do research, get those specifications, and write
your own drivers if you don't like the ones nVidia provides.
