NTPD and FC3

John, you got me thinking after all this time. The problem WAS indeed 
kernel related. I had the very same problem when I first installed FC1 
last year. The GRUB default kernel was the -smp model. I don't know why 
it's picked as the default on this single-processor m/b but it is. Only 
now, we have the added "advantage" of the grub.conf line:

....with jitter that is just a tad more respectable. :-)

All that remains now is for me to reinstall the ntp and dependencies 
that came with FC3 and replace the ntp.conf file with one that leaves 
the stratum 1 servers alone.
