Sound problem with FC3

I installed FC3, (clean install) to my new laptop. It is an HP DV1040US.  I 
have managed to get most everything working so far except the sound. I am 
current on all upgrades and running the .681 kernel.

When I boot, no sound and after a few seconds. Error - artsmessage  sound 
server fatal errror: cpu overload, aborting.

system settings/soundcard detection shows:
Vendor: Intel 
Model 82801DB.DBL/DMB (ICCH4/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller
Module: snd-intel8x0

When I press Play test sound, nothing is heard.

The install was a KDE only install. Other than that nothing particularly 
special.
