Just plug the things that need to survive a power outage into the UPS. 
The rest just need a cheap surge protector.  Don't plug things like
speakers and your monitor into the UPS, and you can get away with a far
smaller unit.  I run 2 machines off a single 350VA UPS and have enough
power reserve to survive a 1/2 hour outage without triggering the
low-reserves shutdown.  Your monitor alone costs about 250VA of UPS, and
you almost certainly don't need it on during the outage.
