Gnome terminal/new tab

Hi list

Can anyone tell me why sometimes when I open a new tab in Gnome terminal it is black?  Just as 
if I had highlighted the whole terminal with the mouse - in fact I use ctrl+shift+t and dont 
even have hold of the mouse when the tab opens.  I then have to click the mouse in the new tab 
3 times to get it to turn white.

A minor thing I know but it bugs me :-(
