Yes, this is true.

Possibly, but you should try to get kudzu to install the drivers for you. There are two files, modprobe.conf 
and modprobe.conf.dist, which handle the file info and the sound config lines are split between the two. You 
would be better off to remove the sound info from the hwconf file and modprobe files, reboot and have kudzu 
re-detect and reinstall your sound drivers.
