If no  mouse is available you should learn the 'script' command.

It will save all (and I do mean all ) the characters in 
a file for you.    Things can be confusing when you
look at editor sessions like vi/vim.   You might also see
the escape characters for various color changes and what not.

You must type 'script' first.
