It's a lot more complicated than that, though, since many packages depend on
others (or even on each other). A "skip this package" button would have to
cause the installer to recalculate the dependency information with that
package removed, and perhaps show you everything that wouldn't work with
that package gone. Worse, some things (gnome-session comes to mind) _aren't_
technically "required" by anything else, and the description doesn't make it
sound particularly vital -- but one might have a hard time figuring out
exactly why the desktop doesn't work without it.
