I can install rpms easily through up2date - I just can't install packages I downloaded myself (i.e. ati driver, thunderbird) Any one know a solution?

I had the same problem with FC2, and I had to reinstall it. I removed a
package that system-package relied on. It may be possible to get the
program to run without a full reinstallation, but I decided since the
system was just installed it was easier for me to reinstall FC2.
