rpm error

Newbie question here:

I'm trying to install programs using rpm. I log in as
root and type "rpm -i" and then the package name.
Everytime I do, I get an error message: "cannot create
%sourcedir /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES"

What am I doing wrong?
